Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev is the most successful German tennis player since Boris Becker: champion at Roland-Garros and the US Open, both titles in the same season, which only Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas and Jannik Sinner had managed before him in the professional era. In New York he was the first German man to win since Becker; in Paris, the ATP notes, the first German men's champion of the professional era at all. Born in Hamburg, right-handed, coached by his father since his junior years; his elder brother Mischa played on the tour himself.

He has played six Grand Slam finals and won two, as his career statistics show: he lost the first in New York to Dominic Thiem from two sets up, then to Carlos Alcaraz in Paris and to Jannik Sinner in Melbourne and at Wimbledon. The titles came in Paris against Flavio Cobolli and in New York against Ben Shelton. He is, the ATP records, the first German to have reached the final at all four majors.

To those he adds two titles at the ATP Finals, Olympic singles gold in Tokyo and 26 singles titles in all, seven of them at Masters 1000 events. At home he has won the Hamburg Open at the Rothenbaum and reached its final once more (Hamburg Open), and taken the BMW Open in Munich in a final against Ben Shelton.

He plays Davis Cup for Germany, most recently as the leading player of Michael Kohlmann's team, and the Laver Cup for Team Europe, confirming his place early in the year.
