The US Open is the last of the four Grand Slam tournaments in a season: a hard-court event run by the United States Tennis Association at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, in the New York borough of Queens. It begins on the Sunday before the last Monday in August and runs for two weeks, with the middle weekend on the Labor Day holiday.
The first championships were played in 1881 as the U.S. National Championships, in Newport, Rhode Island, where the tournament stayed until 1914; it has been on hard courts in Flushing Meadows since 1978. It is the only major never to have been cancelled, through two world wars and the pandemic. It is also the tournament of the night session, two matches from 7pm in Arthur Ashe Stadium, which produces the latest finishes of the tennis year — a scheduling problem the tournament has carried for years.
