Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is the men's national team competition, run by the governing body that now calls itself World Tennis: by the organiser's own account around 275 ties a year in 65 countries, spread across the season, with a final tournament of eight nations at the end of it. A tie is decided over five matches on two days, home or away, and the first team to three wins it.

The competition has four tiers: the Finals at the top, eight nations in one host city; below them the Qualifiers in two rounds, the first in February after the Australian Open and the second in September after the US Open, whose seven winners go through to the Finals; and below those World Group I and II, 26 teams each, playing for promotion. A tie is four singles and one doubles over best-of-three sets: two singles on day one, then the doubles and up to two more singles on day two. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States and is named after Dwight F. Davis, who gave the trophy; the United States is its most successful nation.
