The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the season: a hard-court event run by Tennis Australia at Melbourne Park, with men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles. It starts in the middle of January and runs for two weeks, the singles finals falling on the last weekend of the month.
It was first held in 1905 as the Australasian championships, played on grass, and moved to hard courts and to Melbourne Park in 1988. Its three main courts, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and Margaret Court Arena, all have retractable roofs, which made it the first major able to keep playing indoors through rain and extreme heat. It is also the best attended of the four, with more than 1.36 million spectators at the 2026 tournament.
