ATP Race

The calendar-year points table, officially the PIF ATP Race To Turin, that decides which eight players qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

The ATP Race is the season-only version of the rankings. The ordinary PIF ATP Rankings count results from the past 52 weeks, so a player carries last year's points into this year. The Race starts everyone at zero in January and adds up only points earned in the current season, from the same events at the same values: 2,000 for a Grand Slam title, 1,000 for a Masters 1000, 500 and 250 for the smaller categories. Its purpose is to pick the field for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin in November.

When you see it

The Race matters from late summer onwards, when the top of it hardens and places six to ten are still open. The rule: the top seven in the Race after the last ATP Tour tournament before the Finals qualify; in most seasons that is the week after the Paris Masters. The eighth place goes to a current-year Grand Slam champion positioned between eighth and 20th, if there is one; if there are two, the higher-placed qualifies and the other is the alternate. Otherwise the player in eighth qualifies. In Turin the eight play in two round-robin groups of four before semifinals and a final, all best of three sets.
