ATP 500

An ATP 500 is a tournament in the second tier of the ATP Tour, between the Masters 1000 events and the ATP 250s. The champion earns 500 ranking points. The 2026 calendar has 16 of them, up from 13 in 2024 after Dallas, Doha and Munich were upgraded, and the rulebook groups them into three swings: Rotterdam, Rio, Doha, Dallas, Dubai, Acapulco, Barcelona and Munich early in the year; Hamburg, London, Halle and Washington in the summer; Beijing, Tokyo, Vienna and Basel in the autumn.

When you see it

ATP 500s are where the top ten play in the weeks between the biggest events, partly by obligation. Commitment players, the top 30, must enter four ATP 500 tournaments a year, one of them after the US Open, and a withdrawal from one can bring a ranking penalty, a zero that stays in the player's record. In the rankings a 500 result counts among the six "best other" results of a player who has filled all twelve Slam and mandatory Masters slots, alongside 250s, the United Cup, Monte-Carlo and Challengers (a player who missed some of those events can count more of them); only the Slams and the eight mandatory Masters 1000s have reserved slots, so a 500 title matters more to a player ranked 20th than to the world number 1.
