The favourite loses nearly one tennis match in three
Over 178,275 matches since 2022 the betting favourite lost 31.2% of the time, a 90% favourite about once in 23. The pattern holds from the Grand Slams to ITF level.
Best of five cuts upsets less than the Slams show
Since 1990 the lower-ranked player has won 29.5% of Slam matches and 35.7% at the Masters. Five sets alone explain part of that gap, less where the pairing is lopsided.

The top seed won 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 in three hours and 33 minutes, six years to the day after losing the 2020 final on the same court. He is the first German man to win in New York since Boris Becker in 1989.
Rybakina beats Sabalenka in three sets for her first US Open title
The incoming world No. 1 won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours and 21 minutes for her third major, ending Sabalenka's 20-match winning streak in New York and her bid for a third straight title.

Shelton beats Alcaraz at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history
The eighth seed won 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) in four hours and 28 minutes, his first win over a top-three player. Alcaraz's comeback from a wrist injury ends in the quarterfinals. Shelton plays Frances Tiafoe on Friday.

Zverev reaches the US Open quarterfinals, the only man in the last eight at all four majors this year
The top seed beat Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3) on Monday and, for the first time this tournament, finished before midnight. Next is Botic van de Zandschulp, who saved a match point in a five-hour win and has beaten Alcaraz in New York before.

Alcaraz reaches US Open quarterfinals in his first tournament since April
The defending champion beat Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday night. He had not played a singles match since a wrist injury in Barcelona in April. Ben Shelton is next, on Tuesday.

The US Open night session is broken. Fixing it is not complicated.
A top seed joked about going to a bar because he had finished before midnight. Five of the first seven night sessions on Arthur Ashe Stadium ended after 1 a.m. The tournament has known the fix for years and keeps choosing discretion over a rule.
