Career Grand Slam

A career Grand Slam is the achievement of winning each of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least once over a career. It is distinct from the calendar-year Grand Slam, all four in one season, and from the non-calendar-year Grand Slam, four in a row across two seasons. Because the four are played on three surfaces, hard, clay and grass, a career Grand Slam is taken as proof of an all-court game rather than a specialist's dominance.

When you see it

The term appears whenever a multiple major winner reaches the final of the one tournament they have not won. Wikipedia's list has nine men (Fred Perry, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz) and ten women (Maureen Connolly, Doris Hart, Shirley Fry Irvin, Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova) in singles. Alcaraz completed his at the 2026 Australian Open, beating Djokovic in the final; according to the ATP he was, at 22, the youngest to do it and the sixth man of the Open era. Add an Olympic singles gold and the set becomes a career Golden Slam.
