Qualifier

A qualifier is a player who was not ranked highly enough for direct entry and instead won a place through qualifying, a knockout tournament played in the days before the main draw. The Grand Slam Rule Book defines qualifiers as "players who are included in the draw as a result of their success in a Qualifying competition." At the majors the qualifying draw has up to 128 players; the 2026 US Open men's event took 16 qualifiers into its 128-player main draw, which means three wins each. Smaller tour events run shorter qualifying with fewer places.

When you see it

Draw sheets mark them "Q". Qualifiers are placed into the main draw by lot after qualifying finishes, with no advance link between a qualifying section and a main-draw slot. A qualifier arrives with matches in their legs and no reputation to protect, which is why an early-round upset by one is a tournament staple. A player who loses the final qualifying round has not quite finished: they can sign in as a lucky loser in case someone withdraws. Most of the field never sees qualifying: they are accepted directly on their ranking. A few places are wild cards, given at the tournament's discretion, and the strongest entrants are seeded.
